‘Cities have reemerged not only as objects of study but also as strategic sites for the theorisation of a broad array of social, economic, and political processes central to the current era.’ (Sassen: 1994, 7)

The journey begins with our imaginations transversing the innumerous cities of our created realities. It is almost legendary and inspiring when we open up ourselves to the cityscape and its wonderous skyline, seen from an ocean liner to direct sky bus it is recordable fact that our first glance of the City of divine humanities, breezing over the freeway from the airport, opened our eyes to the excitement of the city. Rising from the plain, as so many of our cities do, its towers of polished glass and steel shimmering and spiraling with the associations of music, visual and literary treats, this new site presented a challenge we could not at any time articulate: what kind of reality statement does the city make today? The City, the Community, the Communter is absorbed and expanded all at once. This journey is an attempt to trace and capture that wonderment and question.

In Search of the Signposts of the Times

This journal is an attempt, at the turn of unprecedented social changes and the cut of virtual reality, to navigate a fresh analogical way of seeing. It is a look at issues from, and continually revisits, the consideration of gendered embodiment in an urban context. An analogical look is, necessarily, a nondual perception and thinking. It bears the weight of a profound cosmological significance that is related to an uncreated active and creative force that not only inaugurates but also maintains an intelligible ordering within that analogy which is an index of participation.

This narrative is spoken out of the fragments of this current reality with all its technological advances, its traumas, ironies and its enchantments; its fears, its dreams and its hopes. This nondual-cosmological map is founded on embodying in analogical relation, in complex communities that constitute the cityscapes of creative force.

For common contemplation, it is a wise for a person who has learnt to recognise one’s own limitations. Long time back I re-discovered that I was no writer. It is, therefore, with a considerable amount of hesitation that I offer this diary or confessions to you, my friends. In mitigation I can only plead the persuasion of many friends who have insisted that it ought to be codified. If I had the necessary gift and time it would have been more satisfactory I am sure to have re-written these thoughts from scratch as a monograph. Possessing neither, I can only present you with some un-edited or un-rehearsed reflection of ideas.

All presenters are plagiarists, and often unconsciously so. Inevitably one reads much in preparation for presentation or in symposium, and in the process of its digestion other people's material gets woven into the text of the paper and reflection. Where direct quotations from any texts I will try to identify the source. But the discerning hearer, reader or viewer will probably recognise allusions to and dependencies on other authors which pass unacknowledged. May I then apologise in advance to any who feel slighted by the omission of their name in the credits. Please take it as a most sincere form of flattery.

Thanks are due to a number of folks without whom this tapestry could not have made progress. In particular may I mention J's tireless inspiration, and to M for introducing this medium in its achievement (at least for its starting point).

This journal, from which subsequent writings proceed, were an example of the kind of expository and postmodern writing with which I am most comfortable. My hope is that they may perhaps bring insights, refreshment, and encouragement to the discerning and challenge to the seeker of knowledge and understanding. It is often said that confessor-presenters are even more remote from the criticisms of their audience. It would be helpful therefore to receive constructive comments from those gallant enough to read it.

Your Spirited Friend.

‘The Heart Of The Matter’

I got the call today, I didn't wanna hear
But I knew that it would come
An old true friend of ours was talkin' on the phone
She said you found someone
And I thought of all the bad luck,
And all the struggles we went through
How I lost me and you lost you
What are these voices outside love's open door
Make us throw off our contentment
And beg for something more?

I've been learning to live without you now
But I miss you sometimes
The more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought I knew, I'm learning them again
I've been tryin' to get down to the Heart of the Matter
But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think it's about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me anymore

These times are so uncertain
There's a yearning undefined
And people filled with rage
We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age
And the trust and self-assurance that lead to happiness
They're the very things we kill, I guess
Pride and competition cannot fill these empty arms
And the work they put between us,
You know it doesn't keep us warm

I've been trying to live without you now
But I miss you, baby
The more I know, the less I understand
And all the things I thought I figured out, I have to learn again
I've been tryin' to get down to the Heart of the Matter
But my will gets weak
And my heart is so shattered
But I think it's about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me anymore

All the people in your life who've come and gone
They let you down, you know they hurt your pride
Better put it all behind you; cause life goes on
You keep carrin' that anger, it'll eat you up inside

I wanna be happily everafter
And my heart is so shattered
But I know it's about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me anymore

I've been tryin' to get down to the Heart of the Matter
Because the flesh will get weak
And the ashes will scatter
So I'm thinkin' about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if you don't love me anymore
Even if you don't love me anymore
